This year we were joined by author and Prize Girl Adrienne Kress. We were all perilously underfed, but managed to stay on our tippy heels for the duration of the auction. After that we changed into more reasonable attire and repaired to the bar, where we ate (finally) and chatted with other authors, and editors, and friends we only see once a year.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_9vLN8_iz-yI/RfBCeSR4mYI/AAAAAAAAACE/WJ4EfYJ4vmk/s320/screenshot_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5039601071097944450" />

It ended up being a very late night for most of us. The Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic is a juried award based on excellence of writing. It is presented annually to a Canadian writer with a speculative fiction novel or book-length collection of speculative fiction published any time during the previous calendar year. Named after the first novel by Phyllis Gotlieb, one of the first published authors of contemporary Canadian science fiction, the award consists of a cash award of Cdn$1,000 and a medallion which incorporates a specially designed "Sunburst" logo. The winner receives his or her award in the fall of every year.

An Evening of Words and Music

Music inspired by the works of Caitlin Sweet, Guy Gavriel Kay, and R. From March 31 to April 2, sf/f fans and authors gathered at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Toronto for a plethora of panels, readings and Guest of Honour appearances. Foremost among said guests was Martin Springett, who confirmed his renaissance man status by exhibiting and speaking about his artwork, and by playing an hour of his fantastic music (including a new piece inspired by A Telling of Stars, which, of course, got me all misty). The highlight of the con for me, however, was not my panels or reading (though the latter, especially, went very well). Nope - it was dressing up in a pink-sequined, go-go mini-dress and auctioneering the Sunburst Award auction with the fabulous Lesley Livingston. I both hope and fear that photos of this event, and these outfits, will make it onto my site sometime soon! There's a particularly fine one of Lesley and me flanking one R. Scott Bakker... Special thanks to webmaster Terry Findlay for all his wonderful Ad Astra photos, and for being such amiable company at the bar! View Ad Astra photos

Editor's Choice Award for Silences

The Silence of Home has been selected as one of the best fantasy books of 2005 by the SF Site editors.

http://www.sfsite.com/columns/best06.htm

Ad Astra 2006 - 25th Anniversary

Caitlin invites you to join her at Toronto's own Science Fiction and Fantasy convention, Ad Astra.
